Volunteering

When you volunteer, you’re giving a truly amazing gift: your time. We are so grateful for the volunteers at HTHA who make so many things possible for those who use our services. We simply couldn’t offer the level of service and support that we do without volunteers.

Types of Volunteers

Individuals

As an individual volunteer, you could help with our food bank, donation rooms, administration work, special events, holiday program, marketing and much more. You can be part of something incredibly rewarding while meeting new people (other volunteers) and having fun.

Group and corporate volunteering

Volunteering as a team (up to 8 people) is a great way to build connections and work together to make a difference — and we love meeting colleagues and friends who are keen to offer their time toward changing the lives of those who use the services of Bryony House.

There are lots of ways you can volunteer as a group at the Bryony House Shelter. Previous groups have helped us with tasks like food donation drives, assembling care packages and sorting holiday donations. We are always open to new teams getting involved.

Good to know

Some of our volunteer positions are open to families of students 15 years of age or older.

We normally need volunteers on weekdays and weekday evenings, but some special events need your support on weekends.

Ready to get started?
To get started, simply complete our volunteer form and someone will reach out to you to start the process.

When there’s an opening that matches your interests and availability, we’ll reach out to arrange an online information session. Please note that some volunteers must complete a vulnerable sector police check and additional orientation and training for their roles.

    Student Placement Process
In order to start your work as a placement student with HTHA we require that you have the following requirements met.

    • Student Placement Resume: Send with a coverletter to our HR Manager [email protected]
    • Successful applicants will be contacted for an interview. We will go over the student’s application and further assess if the student will have a successful placement at HTHA.This is also an opportunity for the student to assess whether a self directed placement is a good fit for them. We encourage questions about the placement and what it means to be part of HTHA.
    • Once you have been accepted as a placement student with HTHA, you will undergo training. This training is designed to introduce placement students to the ins and outs of HTHA. Topics include language, boundaries and ethics, policy and procedures, and how to handle difficult situations. Additional training may be required for certain roles the student might have during their placement.
    • HTHA works with children/youth as well as those in vulnerable situations. As a result, we require that all placement students, undergo a criminal/vulnerable sector background check. The cost of these should be covered by the placement student and they must be completed within the last six months. The criminal records check is done online. An e-mail invitation will be sent to you in order to proceed.
    • We require that all volunteers and staff read and understand the confidentiality agreement as well as the code of conduct policy and sign-off on it. Failure to adhere to policy may result in the termination of the placement.
    • Once all the steps have been completed students will be begin their placement. The placement is agreed upon by the placement student, placement student advisor, and HTHA HR Manager.
    • It is the students responsibility to meet the requirements outlined by their program. As outlined in the application, placement students are expected track and complete the hours required for their placement, meet their goals and objectives, and complete their proposed project.
